【北京大学无机化学学术报告】Combined 2p/3d/4f chemistry: new synthetic routes towards magnetic materials

Abstract

TThe combination of different spin carriers within the same molecule is a strategy largely employed for obtaining magnetic materials. Indeed, most of the 3-D molecule-based magnets, Single Chain Magnets (SCMs), as well as numerous Single Molecule Magnets (SMMs) are heterospin coordination compounds, constructed from: (i) two different paramagnetic metal ions; (ii) paramagnetic d or f metal ions and paramagnetic ligands (2p-3d; 2p-4f)); (iii) three different 2p-3d-4f spin carriers (heterotrispin systems). The lanthanide cations are very useful for the synthesis of SMMs and SCMs, since they bring an important magnetic anisotropy. Other properties (luminescence, strong magnetocaloric effect) can be reached as well, by choosing the appropriate lanthanide ions. Moreover, for a synthetic chemist, the design of heterospin complexes is an exciting challenge: a successful strategy asks for a good control over the spin topology and over the strength of the exchange interactions which are involved. In this lecture I will focus on new synthetic approaches for molecular nano-magnets and spin qubits, which are currently developed in our laboratory, with special emphasis on the synthesis of novel nitronyl-nitroxide ligands.
