Zheng grew up in Jining, Shandong (山东济宁市). After earning his B.S. at Shandong University, he decided that he wants to learn more about how do molecules respond to external forces. He then moved to Beijing for his PhD at Peking University. His current research interest is developing new mechanophores to edit the backbone of polymers. In his free time, he likes listening to music, traveling, and watching movies.
