The 1st Symposium on “New Frontiers in Organic Chemistry:Towards Cleaner, Greener Chemical Processes”, hosted by the College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering of Peking University, was held successfully at Beijing Laffitte Castle Conference Center on September 1-5, 2011. Over 70 representatives from all over the world attended this conference. Prof. Zhangjie Shi of the College of Chemistry served as chairman of this symposium.

Wenping Liang, Executive Vice Director and Yongjun Chen, Vice Director of the Chemistry Division of National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) presented warm welcome remarks. They stated that NSFC would keep giving young chemists strong support to do their own research and develop the exchange and collaboration.28 young researchers of related fields, domestically and abroad were invited to give keynote lectures. In addition, the conference organized an exhibition with 25 posters, covering a variety of frontier fields of organic chemistry such as organometallic catalysis, small organic molecules catalysis, inert bond activation and complicated total synthesis of natural products.

The symposium provided a great platform for young researchers all over the world to communicate and learn from each other and paved the way for them to gain substantial exchange in Organic Chemistry.
This symposium was sponsored by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Peking University, Key Lab of Bioorganic Chemistry and Molecular Engineering of Ministry of Education, the Synthetic Organic Chemistry and Methodological Innovation Research Group of the NSFC, the Ministry of Education’s “Project 111” and J&K Company.
