Abstract

Most biological signals are
perpetually changing in space and time. Conventional biosensors are analog
sensors that often suffer from low sensitivity of detection. Here I describe a
transistor-type of nanosensor with a sharp on/off response to a threshold pH
value to switch and amplify biological signals.  I will describe the use of pH
nanotransistors to demarcate tumor margins for image-guided surgery and
pathological staging. The chemical transistor concept represents a new strategy
for converting an analog biologic variable into a digital output, which provides
a unique prism for biological interrogation and disease
diagnosis.
