State Key Laboratory for Structural Chemistry of Unstable and Stable Species

1. Introduction
The predecessors of the State Key Laboratory for Structural Chemistry of Unstable and Stable Species are the Opening Laboratory for Structural Chemistry in Department of Chemistry, Peking University, and Laboratory forStructure of Dynamic State in Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). They were combined, in 1987, to form a joint laboratory after the experts' assessment and being approved by the State Planning Commission. In 1991, the joint laboratory was further evaluated by the authorities and then became an opening one to the institutions and universities over the country. Professor Tang You-Qi, who is an Academician of CAS, served as the chairman of the academic committee of the lab. before 2000, Professor Zhao Xin-Sheng is his successor until now, and Professor Lai Lu-Hua is the current director of the lab. The lab. has thirty-nine faculty members in total, including thirty-four researchers, four technicians and one secretary on scientific research affairs.
2. Research Fields
  * Structural Biology: determination and prediction of biological structures; design and synthesis of biologically relevant molecules
* Single molecule detection and its biological applications
* Ultrafast process and dynamic structure of transient state in chemical and biological systems
* Synthesis and structure of multi-nucleus metal clusters and functional molecules
* Surface structural chemistry of functional materials
* Structure of transient molecular/atomic species in the reaction process of gaseous phase
3. Teaching and Training
The lab. is authorized to deliver master degree and doctorate degree in physical chemistry, and also accommodates postdoc. research fellows. We have trained more than 200 Ms and Ph.D. students.
4. International Collaboration
We devote ourselves to the development of international exchange and collaboration, and have established cooperation with scientists in UK, USA, Australia, Israel and so on. Currently, we are carrying out joint projects with our partners in Austria, Demark, France, Korea and Japan. Each year, about thirty researchers go abroad for academic activities and more than twenty foreign scientists visit our lab.
5. Goal
The goal of laboratory is to become an active academic center on the study of structures and properties of stable and unstable species in chemical and biological systems. We hope to attract more and more domestic as well as foreign scientists, and to promote interdisciplinary research work. We also hope to offer excellent opportunities for young chemists and related scientists for them to develop scientific careers.
