The Institute of Organic Chemistry (IOC) at Peking University has one of the strongest organic programs in China. In 1987 and 2001, it was recognized twice by the Ministry of Education as the key disciplinary. In 1993, the Key Laboratory of Bioorganic Chemistry and Molecular Engineering of Ministry of Education, which is closely associated with IOC, was established. After the hard work by several generations, IOC has made important achievements on teaching and research, and has trained generations of young talents. Recently, though recuiting talented young scientists to join the faculty, the IOC is now mainly composed of energetic and ambitious young research groups. They are growing rapidly and are becoming active in various fields in organic chemistry. This is the foundation for the future development of IOC. Among the 20 faculty members of IOC, there are 6 full professors and 10 associate professors, including 1 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, two Changjiang professors, three recipients of National Outstanding Young Scientists Found, and 1 recipients of Trans-Century Training Programme Foundation of the Ministry of Education.

The IOC has diverse research programs, which include synthetic organic chemistry, bio-organic chemistry, organometallic chemistry, physical organic chemistry and organic materials.

With the development of national economy, the research infrastructure of IOC has been improved greatly in the past few years. There are 200, 300, and 400 MHz NMR instruments, and high-resolution mass spectroscopy, GC-MS, FT-IR, HPLC, etc. Moreover, the graduate students can directly operate all these instruments in their research. Graduate students find these practical experiences invaluable in their future careers. The problem of chemical reagents, which used to be a bottleneck in organic chemistry research in China, has been largely resolved recently. We can conveniently order chemicals from Acros and Aldrich through several chemical reagent dealers located in Beijing. As for the scientific information, the Chemistry College has the latest important journals in organic chemistry. Recent development of Internet further enhances our ability to rapidly access the new information in the area. Over all, the IOC has already possessed the basic requirements for top research activities.
